WHAT IS PSYCHOTHERAPY?

In Ontario, psychotherapy is a health profession regulated by the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario.

The title of psychotherapist is protected. Only those who have been authorized by the Order may use it and perform the authorized act of psychotherapy.

Through psychotherapy, it is possible to treat a person in a therapeutic relationship for various reasons: discouragement, sadness, anxiety, fear, stress, feelings of guilt and abandonment, thinking problems, lack of self-esteem and self-confidence, behavioral problems and many others.

THERAPEUTIC APPROACHES

  • Cognitive-behavioral therapy

Cognitive-Behavioral Theory is an active therapy that aims to address the client's difficulties in living in the here and now by using practical exercises that focus on the symptoms that can be observed through behaviors, with the help of a therapist. The therapist exchanges with the patient, informs him/her, suggests techniques, tips, etc. aiming to intervene on the cognitive processes considered to be at the origin of the emotions and disorders, whether they are conscious or not.

  • Humanist therapy

This approach is based on the principle that each human being is unique and has the capacity to be autonomous, to develop and to realize his or her own potential. This theory is also based on the belief that an individual in a climate of trust and respect tends to develop in a positive way. The individual is seen as being able to understand his or her difficulties and to find solutions in order to make appropriate changes. The client is invited to prioritize himself while being free to make his own choices. Psychotherapy is aimed at helping the client to realize his or her full potential.

  • Mindfulness therapy

Mindfulness focuses on the person's strengths and acceptance of their emotional experience. Several research studies have demonstrated the effectiveness and usefulness of this form of therapy in the way it works with people. This therapy is very popular and is often integrated with other therapies such as cognitive behavioral therapy. Mindfulness psychotherapy has applications for a variety of medical and psychological conditions: stress, anxiety, depression, insomnia, emotional or substance dependency, and eating disorders.
